Spring can mean only one thing for St. Ambrose students: Last Blast. Before the stress and frustration of finals overwhelm students, they get a chance to kick back, relax and have fun. For one weekend of the year, students wake up at 8 a.m. on Saturday and party until they cannot party any longer. Students are able to participate in numerous events and activities sponsored by Campus Activities Board or participate in their own appointed games. Last Blast will take place on April 30 and May 1.
"I have always had a really good time at Last Blast and this year is the first year I will be 21 and I can honestly say this is the first year I will be drinking," Sarah Wurst, SAU junior, said. "Previous years I would just run around completely sober and had a really great time too."
CAB is sponsoring the Spring Olympic Marathon Day, an annual event in which students form teams to compete in a series of games to raise money for the Special Olympics. SOMDay started the week prior to Last Blast and will continue on Saturday for the final events and prizes.
Along with SOMDay events, there will be many other events and activities for students to participate in. The Department of Music and CAB have arranged for students to perform their talents at Live Outside the Lounge. After student watch their peers perform, they are able to show off their skills in Live Band Karaoke.
"I think it is fun, I wish we had the type of really great atmosphere we have on Last Blast more often at St. Ambrose," Wurst stated. "Why does it just have to be Last Blast? Why not first blast, second blast, third blast?"
Saturday morning will kick off 2nd annual Dash 4 Drex at 9 a.m. The race will begin outside of Bechtel Hall and will end in front of the Rogalski Center. At 11:30 SOMDay will continue with their events at Timmerman Field. There will be a spring football scrimmage, sponsored by Athletics, at Brady Street Stadium from 2-4 p.m. Continuous transportation will be provided to and from the Rogalski Center.
There will also be a variety of musical acts on the Rogalski Center patio. Acts include Anderson Squared, an acoustic folk band, A Piece of Meat, a groove based party jam band, Boot Hill Ridge, a contemporary country/rock band, Nahvee, a Chicago rapper, Superfly Samurai, rock-n-roll cover band, and Wicked Liz and the Belly Swirls. A caricature artist will be in the front lawn of the Rogalski Center from 3-7 p.m.
