For those graduating from college who aren't afraid of the unique opportunities the world has to offer, a Fulbright scholarship may be the ideal option for that first year after receiving a degree. The Fulbright scholarship, although very competitive to receive, offers research studies or teaching assistants abroad for students who are qualified.
"The Fulbright scholarship is known all over the world," Dr. Barbara Pitz, St. Ambrose advisor for the Fulbright scholarship and English professor, said. "The award is given to highly motivated, open-minded individuals."
The Fulbright is an educational and cultural exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State. There are 140 countries that have the award, 32 of those countries offer opportunities in teaching English.
Anyone who applies for the scholarship competes with every other college in the nation. Phi Eta Sigma presented an informational meeting that took place on March 25 for anyone who was interested in applying. Pitz assured those who attended that you don't have to be from Harvard or Yale to get the award. St. Ambrose students have been very successful in the past.
"There has to be a strong sense of belief by the applicant that this scholarship is what they want and know they can get it," Dr. Ryan Dye, Director of International Education, said. "This award will open so many doors for you."
The Fulbright provides recipients with enough accommodations to live comfortably for the 10 months that they will be working or studying in a foreign country. A few of these benefits include airfare, a monthly stipend that covers room, board and incidental costs and basic health insurance.
"Fulbright scholars are those who can contribute to and benefit from the cultural exchange," Pitz added. "Not only do you study and do research, but you are active in the culture as well."
A few of the eligibility requirements for the Fulbright include being a U.S. citizen, having a bachelor's degree and being in good health. Other qualities that applicants should have are strong academic preparation and a good proposal statement.
