Some Iowa City residents have already noticed a difference in the dining atmosphere as restaurants are now smoke-free under the statewide smoking ban in most public places. Some are happy about the change, some are quitting the habit, and some are crying out at the political injustice of it all.

Was no death penalty for child rape the right decision? 13

More important than the restitution of any particular crime is the trying, yet essential obligation to forgo punishments that obscure the state's dedication to moral conduct. Hence, the death penalty cannot truly serve the interests of any authority intent on leading by example. Rather, capital punishment works only to eliminate the ethical disparity that distinguishes the state from its most deplorable criminals.

Those caught smoking in prohibited areas are more likely to receive a warning than a ticket.

Iowa City police Sgt. Troy Kelsay said officers can issue citations to anyone violating the new policy, but he thinks most of the time the issue can be addressed through education rather than a fine.

My ears, not to mention my self-esteem, were tired and battered after listening to the newest album from G-Unit, Terminate on Sight (T.O.S.), set to be released today. It is an album riddled with all the bad stereotypes of rap - loud and obnoxious beats, references to violence and drugs, and of course the unrelenting objectification of women.

That time of the year is upon us again. It's that dreaded week where young adults from all over the country trek to a small plot outside Bushnell to camp out and listen to the live bands at the Cornerstone Festival.

I was minding my own business in the toothpaste aisle of everyone's favorite one-stop-shopping outlet when I suddenly found myself in a conversation with a polite elderly woman.
